Voice Professor, Student, Alumna in Italy for Conducting, Singing Symposium
Lassetter performing in Italy

Jacob Lassetter, associate professor of voice in the Department of Music, is singing and teaching this month at the Bassi Brugnatelli International Conducting and Singing Symposium in Robbiate, Italy.

Webster student Sophie Shugart and Webster alumna Kait Turner are participating in this year’s program. They will receive lessons, coaching, movement, conversational Italian instruction, and performance opportunities in concert solos and opera scenes.

"I teach voice lessons to promising young singers, and work with conductors and orchestral musicians on excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Elijah,” Lassetter said.

"I enjoy working with students from all over the world, and am excited to have Kait and Sophie in this symposium this year as well. Working with colleagues from other schools and nations helps keep me in tune with how these subjects are taught in other places.”

Up Next: Union Avenue Opera

Lassetter returns from Italy to begin rehearsals with Union Avenue Opera (UAO), where he is singing the role of Peter in Hänsel und Gretel in August.

Jeffrey Carter, chair of the Department of Music in Webster's Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts, noted that several Webster students and alumni are both in the ensemble and cast in the condensed version that will be performed for community outreach.

“Jacob’s professional singing keeps him at the forefront of what is happening in the opera world," Carter said. "And Jacob is the new director of Opera Studio at Webster, so the Union Avenue Opera connection is particularly important. UAO artistic director Scott Schoonover works with our opera studio students; hires students to perform in the chorus; employs Webster alumni and faculty; and provides scholarship assistance through their training program.”
