Voice Student Sophie Shugart Wins at NATS
Shugart

Sophie Shugart, a sophomore vocal performance major from Florida, placed first in her category at the recent regional student competition hosted by the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

“We are not surprised that Sophie won her division," said Jeffrey Carter, chair of the Department of Music. "Our students do well at NATS competition at the national and divisional levels, and Sophie is the real deal — a singer of grace and poise.”

Shugart was recently seen in a major role in the January Opera Scenes, and had a featured solo in the annual Gift to the City concert in December.

NATS competitions are held annually at the regional and multi-state level. In October, four students took home awards in Iowa. Their results continue an impressive tradition.

As part of their degree programs, vocal majors at Webster take weekly individual voice lessons, and sing in choral ensembles and opera studio. Many also take professional gigs in local choruses and with area synagogues and churches.
