Webster Conservatory, Alumnus Celebrate Creativity with [title of show] Musical

Sep. 19, 2017

title-of-show
Webster's rendition premiers Sept. 27.

Webster University alumnus Hunter Bell (BFA '93) wrote a book turned one-act musical that was performed on Broadway in 2008. It received notable attention at the Musical Theatre Festival, where it premiered in New York City and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.

Now the Conservatory of Theatre Arts is bringing it to Webster, as they perform the show beginning Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Emerson Studio Theatre.

The Friday, Sept. 29, performance will be followed by a Q&A with Hunter Bell.

Synopsis

Jeff and Hunter, two self-confessed nobodies in New York, make a pact. They will write an original musical and submit it to a festival. The only catch? The deadline is in three weeks. They gather their friends, Susan and Heidi, and their trusted accompanist and set off. With the team assembled, Jeff and Hunter hit another roadblock. What should they write about? Jeff and Hunter decide to follow the old saying, “write what you know,” and set off on a unique musical adventure: writing a musical about writing a musical. As the deadline looms, insecurities creep in and jealousies flare. Will the team succeed with their musical? Could it even win a Tony? Frequently hilarious, occasionally heartbreaking, and thoroughly inspiring, [title of show] is a love story celebrating individuality and creativity.

“Mr. Bowen and Mr. Bell have turned themselves into well-drawn comic characters and shaped their struggles — and those of Ms. Blickenstaff and Ms. Blackwell — into a shaggy saga of youthful hopes frustrated, channeled and (hooray!) ultimately rewarded, as their doodle of a musical comes together.”
-The New York Times
