Department of Music Convocation recognizes scholarship recipients

The Department of Music held its annual Fall Convocation on Aug. 30. Department chair Jeffrey Carter and Peter Sargent, Dean of the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts, welcomed students and introduced new faculty member Matt Pickart.

A highlight of the convocation is the recognition of students receiving endowed and annual scholarship awards. Over the last decade, the Department of Music has more than doubled the number of endowed scholarship funds available for student support. This year featured the first-ever scholarship from the Lynn and Thriess Britton Endowed Scholarship, which was awarded to trombone performance major Kyle Shewcraft.

The two highest scholarship honors bestowed by music faculty are the Peggy Fossett Endowed Music Scholarship and the Buder Foundation Annual Scholarship.  Fossett Scholars 2018-19 are vocal performance major Olivia Bosaw; music education major Faith Boyd; Lavon Harrison, a student in the Bachelor of Arts program; jazz studies major Steven Johnson; and piano performance major Claire Miller. Receiving Buder Foundation grants are jazz studies major Nathan Rauscher, and graduate students Jae Park (church music) and Jacob Stergos (jazz performance).
