Webster Alumnae Winners at Metropolitan Opera Auditions

Webster University vocal performance alumnae Brittany Graham MM '18 and Emma Sorenson BM '13 were named district winners this weekend in the annual auditions hosted by the Metropolitan Opera National Council.

Saturday was a great day for Webster University," said Martha J. Hart, director of vocal studies in the Department of Music. "Three former students and one current voice student sang for the St. Louis auditions. Randell McGee [BM '17] and current graduate student Amy Mazzeo sang beautifully. Emma Sorenson and Brittany Graham were both district winners, and now go on to the regional auditions in Little Rock.”

Graham was a Leigh Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre in the 2018 season. She also sings locally with Union Avenue Opera, Saint Louis Symphony In Unison Chorus, and American Kantorei.

Sorenson is currently affiliated with Chicago Opera Theater. She last starred locally with Union Avenue Opera, after completing her graduate voice degree at Boston Conservatory.

The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions is a program designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers, according to the Metropolitan Opera website. The Auditions take place in 41 districts and 12 regions throughout the U.S. and Canada, and are all run locally by volunteers.

“Webster is strongly involved in the local auditions each year, given the power of our vocal performance program,” notes Jeffrey Carter, chair of the Department of Music in the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts. “We continue to celebrate successes. Of course the most notable success in these auditions is Jennifer Johnson Cano, who has gone from strength to strength since graduating from Webster. She was a Leigh Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, a national winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, and then a member of the Lindemann Young Artist program at the Met. We won’t be surprised to find Brittany and Emma taking that same path.
