Gorloks Have Strong Season Start
Steven Dooley pitches at a recent game for the Gorloks. Dooley, who is a senior, is having a fantastic year, having pitched the team to 10 consecutive wins this season. The Gorloks are currently undefeated in their league.

ST. LOUIS, April 02, 2013 - The Webster University baseball team entered the 2013 season with much anticipation, being ranked in the pre-season top ten in two national polls after its fifth place finish in the 2012 NCAA III World Series. The Gorloks have not disappointed, and a 10-game win streak has them sitting at #15 in the U.S. in the latest rankings.

The Gorloks opened the season in Memphis, TN, going 2-1, but a rough home stand the following weekend dropped them to 2-4 overall. A spring break trip to the Central Florida Invitational, against some of the toughest competition in the U. S., was all Webster needed to get untracked. The team started the trip with a 10-1 trouncing of #1 ranked Wheaton College (MA).

After losing game two to #4 ranked Cortland State (NY), Webster reeled off wins over the College of New Jersey, #9 ranked St. Joseph's College (ME), #2 ranked and 2012 World Series champs Marietta College (OH). Webster finished the trip at 5-1 with a win over #25 Augustana College.
Back home, the Gorloks have won six straight over St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents and sit atop the SLIAC rankings with a 6-0 record and an overall mark of 13-5. Webster's deep pitching staff, with a talented core of 2012 returnees...plus several pitchers making their return after missing the 2012 season with injuries, raised expectations for a successful 2013 campaign.

In Florida, the pitching staff allowed only six earned runs in the five wins over top notch competition and boasts a team earned run average of 2.94 for the season. Senior starter Steven Dooley (Oran HS, MO) leads the staff with a 1.10 ERA and a 3-2 record, and teammate Cody Hafeli (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) is 4-1 with a 2.84 ERA. Jason Gray (SR, Eureka HS,MO) is 2-0 out of the bullpen with a save, and has allowed no runs while striking out nine in seven appearances.

Offensively, Webster's "Go-Go Gorloks", as they are called, have seemed to hit their stride as of late, stealing 48 bases and averaging 10 runs per game over its last seven. Webster averaged just over three stolen bases per game in 2012, and is averaging 4.3 per game so far in 2013. Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL), the NCAA III leader in steals in 2012 with 58, is a perfect 19 for 19 in attempts in 2013. Also burning up the base paths for Webster are teammates Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) and Jared Turner (JR, Chatham Glenwood HS, IL) with 11 and 10 steals, respectively.

Webster is hoping its continued success in 2013 will lead to its seventh straight SLIAC title, another trip back to the NCAA III championships and, ultimately, another berth in the College World Series.
