Webster Choir Selected for Prestigious Appearance

Jun. 26, 2013

ST. LOUIS, JUNE 26, 2013 - The Webster University Chamber Singers will present a main session concert at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) biennial divisional conference, March 19-22, 2014 in Little Rock, Ark. Of the 34 universities that submitted performance applications, only five collegiate choirs were selected to appear at the 2014 conference in Little Rock, through a blind audition process.

This will be the first performance of a Webster University choir at an ACDA conference and also the first time that any university in the St. Louis region has appeared on a divisional ACDA conference program.

“People will work their entire careers to try and earn one of these coveted spots,” said Jeffrey Carter, chair of the Webster University Department of Music, located in the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts. “A convention appearance of this caliber puts the school on the map.”

Webster Chamber Singers is led by Trent Patterson, Director of Choral Studies and Music Education. This flagship choral ensemble at Webster University is comprised of select students who reflect the artistic strength of the vocal studies program of the University. Many of the students are music majors, with others representing a variety of majors at Webster University.

“Dr. Patterson has developed an amazing sound and spirit in these students,” Carter said. “They will soon learn that this honor is similar to being invited to a regional NCAA tournament that includes colleges from high-powered states like Texas.  This selection is a true game-changer for these students and for this music program.”

According to the ACDA, it is “a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching … and strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music's position in American society.” The Southwestern Division is comprised of seven states: Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
