Incomplete grades: Guidance on when to use them and why, new Starfish features

Do you have a student who has not attended class for several weeks? Do you have a student who is missing most of the required work? If so, do not submit an Incomplete as the student’s grade or leave the student’s grade as "In Progress." Instead, submit the appropriate earned grade for the student. If the student contacts you to discuss the grade and you want to offer opportunities for the student to successfully complete the course, you still have options.

Faculty, professional staff, and even students have been expressing excitement about Starfish, the Student Success Portal. Feedback has focused on a number of areas, including the accessibility of information that is needed for day-to-day operations that was previously more cumbersome to find. But the excitement extends beyond the accessibility of information to the ease of connecting students to the supports they need to be successful, the ability to access and share notes in one globally-accessible location, and the improvement of business practices.

Davis Wins Freshman Writing Award

Students, faculty, staff, and the administration celebrated outstanding student writers at the Freshman Writing Award ceremony and luncheon. The first-place winner was freshman Cheyenne Davis for her essay, “Webster Groves: A Community of Gardeners." Anna Rickard received honorable mention for her essay “Recovery and Resistance: An Analysis of Survivors’ Role in Remastering Trauma.” This year winners were awarded educational grants to be used for textbooks or any academic expense of their choice.

Attention Undergraduate Advisors, Not Yet Registered System Flag to Launch April 20

On Friday, April 20, the Student Success Portal will disseminate a Not Yet Registered system flag for Webster Groves undergraduate students who have not yet registered for Fall 2018 classes by Thursday, April 19. When the flag launches, advisors for Webster Groves undergraduate students should expect to receive emails from the Student Success Portal.

Did you know that WebNet+ credit hour production has more than tripled since its formalized beginning in Fall 2015? Did you know that WebNet+ has connected courses between Webster Groves, Leiden, and Geneva while also including a cohort of 19 online students for a fully immersive, 21st-century learning experience? Faculty and staff are invited to a workshop on March 7 to see what it’s like to teach a WebNet+ course.
