Deadline Extended for Fall, Fall 1 Starfish Early Term Progress Survey

Deadline extended for current Starfish Early Term Progress Survey. Due to recent access issues to the Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish, the Early Term Progress Survey – Fall and Fall 1, 2018, which was set to expire at 11 p.m. CST on Monday, Sept. 17, has been extended to 11 p.m. CST on Friday, Sept. 21.

Academic Counseling is a service provided by the Academic Resource Center to all Webster University students across the worldwide Webster University community. It involves individual one-on-one sessions for students who would like to develop better organizational and learning strategies. The sessions can include one-time events or ongoing academic counseling and mentoring services.

The Fall and Fall 1 Early Term Progress Survey will launch via the Student Success Portal on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018. This survey will be distributed to all Fall and Fall 1 U.S. on-ground and online courses and will be available for faculty to complete during a 10-day window that will close on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018.

Incomplete Guidance: End of Summer terms

As faculty members prepare to submit grades, we encourage faculty members and academic advisors to review the guidance regarding Incompletes and ensure that Incompletes are only being used in appropriate situations. All graduate and undergraduate Summer session courses should be assigned a grade by Friday, Aug. 3, and undergraduate second five-week session courses should be assigned a grade by Friday, Aug.10. Webster Welcomes Students in Summer TAP Program July 18-27

The Academic Resource Center and academic partners throughout campus are gearing up for the Summer TAP (Transitions and Academic Prep) program to be held July 18-27, 2018. TAP is a free residential program for conditionally admitted Transitions students who are new to Webster. During the 10-day program, TAP students live on campus, take a two-credit college course, and participate in campus workshops and activities, including the faculty "lunch and learn," to help them transition to university life.

The Inventory, available beginning Friday, July 6, is a new feature available to faculty and staff users in the Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish. The Inventory is a listing of student success interventions, including at other Starfish partner institutions, that can be explored to provide additional support to students. Faculty and staff users can search the Inventory and share relevant information on services, programs and support with students.

Incomplete Grades: Faculty guidance on usage, Starfish features

June 27, 2018

Courses ending Friday, June 29, must have grades posted by Friday, July 6. Do not submit an Incomplete as a student’s grade or leave a student’s grade as In Progress if the student has not attended class for several weeks and/or is missing most of the required work. Inaccurately using Incomplete grades or leaving In Progress grades posted can harm a student’s academic progress, course sequencing, persistence and graduation. See this post for more guidance.

The Webster University community used the Academic Resource Center’s (ARC’s) Writing Center and Online Writing Center more than 2,000 times during the 2017-2018 academic year, with graduate students and undergraduate freshmen being the largest users, in part thanks to faculty recommendations about these services. Student Success Portal Summer Early Term Progress Surveys launch June 15 with updates

June 11, 2018

The Summer Early Term Progress Survey will launch via the Student Success Portal on Friday, June 15, 2018. This survey will be distributed to most graduate and undergraduate Summer U.S. on-ground and online courses and will be available for faculty to complete during a 10-day window that will close on Monday, June 25, 2018. Courses not surveyed are running in non-standard terms and have already completed or will not yet have started by the time of the survey window.

Brown Named to New ARC Assistant Director Role

Carolyn I. Brown has accepted the position of assistant director in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). She will officially begin this role on June 16, 2018, and has been filling most of the relevant responsibilities since late December 2017. The assistant director position is designed to consolidate all ARC integrity programs in one role.

Incomplete grades: Guidance on when to use them and why, new Starfish features

Do you have a student who has not attended class for several weeks? Do you have a student who is missing most of the required work? If so, do not submit an Incomplete as the student’s grade or leave the student’s grade as "In Progress." Instead, submit the appropriate earned grade for the student. If the student contacts you to discuss the grade and you want to offer opportunities for the student to successfully complete the course, you still have options.
