Academic Resource Center Offers Tutoring Aid for Students

With the Fall semester underway, students may need additional subject-matter assistance. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) will offer a Tutoring Program that provides tutoring assistance to current Webster University students either through peer tutoring or through access to professional, online tutoring by NetTutor. Both resources are offered free of charge and can help students achieve greater confidence, independence, and success as learners.

All faculty are invited to attend the Faculty Networking Event and Resource Fair on Friday, Sept. 20 for an afternoon of learning and socializing. Connect Your Students to Academic Counseling

This week is an ideal time to revisit academic counseling and how it can help students. Academic Counseling is a service provided by the Academic Resource Center to all Webster University students across the worldwide Webster University community. It involves individual one-on-one sessions for students who would like to develop better organizational and learning strategies. The sessions can include one-time events or ongoing academic counseling and mentoring services.

ADA Accommodation Reminders, Resources, and Upcoming Training

With the new academic year upon us, faculty will have received copies of students’ letters of accommodations for Fall I and fall semester courses. To assist in making these accommodations, the ARC has a variety of resources, from charts to podcasts. In addition, there will be various training sessions throughout the year for faculty and staff related to supporting the needs of students with disabilities. The first of these trainings will take place on Oct. 30.

The Fall and Fall 1, 2019, Early Term Progress Survey launches Friday, Sept. 6, and is open for 10 days, closing Monday, Sept. 16, at 11 p.m. Central Time. This survey is distributed to all graduate and undergraduate Fall 1 term and Fall semester courses on-ground and online throughout the United States.

Features Added as New Students Complete Summer TAP Program

August 20, 2019

The 2019 cohort of the Transitions and Academic Prep (TAP) program experienced an even more focused academic curriculum than previous cohorts, with 26 students enrolled in two credits of WRIT 1000 Basic Writing Workshop and one credit of EDUC 1500 Webster 101, marking three credits for successful completion of the program. This year’s program ran July 18-27.

Extended Campuses: ADA Accommodations Webinar Aug. 13

Nellie Hopmann, Webster University’s Academic ADA coordinator, will be hosting a webinar for all extended site employees who work with students to set up and implement ADA accommodations on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 12:30 p.m. CST. The webinar will provide information on the steps that should be taken in setting up accommodations, and how extended site staff can support students throughout the accommodations process.

Hands-on Faculty Training for Teaching and Learning Technology

All part-time and full-time new and returning faculty are invited to three hands-on sessions on Tuesday, Aug. 20, about using technology to support and engage students. Come learn how the Student Success Portal, Microsoft Office 365, and WorldClassRoom (Canvas) can help you support student success, engage your students in and out of the classroom, and collaborate and communicate with colleagues and students. All sessions will be held on Aug. 20 in the Library eClassroom (Emerson Library 110).

Podcast Series Supports Accessibility for Students with Disabilities

The first podcast of the series is "Student Self-Advocacy 101," with important information about accessing accommodations as a student with a disability. This information is important for all students and helpful to faculty and staff members as well.

ARC Programs Receive Three-Year Recertification

The Tutoring Program and Writing Center, two programs in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), have received recertification of the College Reading and Learning Association International Tutor Training Program Certification. Work for the recertification was completed by Carolyn I. Brown, assistant director, and Kristin Cobos, Writing and Online Writing Center coordinator.

Helping Students Succeed: Let the library, ARC help with extended site orientations

July 12, 2019

Prepare new students for success by including the Library in your orientations! Librarians are available to appear at your campus via Webnet+ to give students a brief demonstration of the resources and services available to them. Web conference can be as brief as 10 minutes, and be tailored to meet the needs of your students. Our general introduction video, How We Can Help, is also available on the library YouTube channel and homepage. The Academic Resource Center also makes such orientation available.
