Confucius Institute Events: Chairman Ni visit; annual teacher training workshop

The Confucius Institute (CI) at Webster University recently hosted two major events. On Nov. 2, President Beth Stroble welcomed Haidong Ni, the chairman of our partner university, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), to the Webster campus. On Nov. 3, Dr. Ni delivered the opening remarks for CI’s annual Teacher Training Workshop for local Chinese teachers in the Emerson Library Conference Room.

The Confucius Institute at Webster University hosted an event yesterday, “Doing Business in China: What They Don’t Teach You in Business School”. Students, staff, and faculty listened to anthropologist Elanah Uretsky, as she shed light on the intricacies of how business culture has affected public health in China. Uretsky focused her talk on the HIV epidemic, examining how cultural concepts and practices in China compel the intersection of business and risky behavior in relation to the spread of the disease.

CHINA Town Hall: A videoconference featuring Condoleezza Rice

China Town Hall is a national conversation on China taking place in scores of communities throughout the United States and in Greater China. This year's event includes a national videoconference featuring former U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Hosted in St. Louis by the Confucius Institute, locally the videoconference will be followed by an in-person lecture by Joan Kaufman, speaking on “China’s Current Health and Demographic Challenges.”

Confucius Institute Event: Doing Business in China

The Confucius Institute at Webster University will host an event, "What They Don't Teach You about Doing Business in China in Business School," on Wednesday, Sept. 26, on the main campus in Webster Groves. Hear from Elanah Uretsky, an anthropologist at Brandeis University whose research includes medical anthropology, HIV/AIDS, gender roles and disease transmission. A reception follows her talk, which is moderated by Elsa Fan, assistant professor of anthropology at Webster University.

Trade War? Webster Hosts U.S.-China Economic Relations Expert

Are the United States and China headed for a trade war? That was the theme for a talk by Chinese affairs expert Hank Levine to an audience of over 80 Webster University students, faculty and community members. With the recent announcements of tariff hikes by both countries, Levine provided timely insights during an engagement moderated by Webster professor Allan MacNeill as part of the Contemporary China speaker series hosted by the Confucius Institute at Webster.

Bristol Elementary Students Celebrate Chinese New Year at Confucius Institute

As part of its ongoing celebration of Chinese New Year, the Confucius Institute at Webster University recently partnered with teachers at Bristol Elementary School in Webster Groves to give students a taste of this holiday’s major customs and over all significance to the over one billion people who celebrate it worldwide.

Registration for Children's After School Chinese Classes

Do you and your kids want to know more about Chinese culture? Do your kids want to learn Chinese language in a fun way? Now is the time! This year, the Confucius Institute at Webster University is offering a Chinese language and culture class for kids aged 7-11. The kids will learn some spoken Chinese for day-to-day use through doing fun activities, watching videos and making traditional Chinese handicrafts.

Happy New Year from the Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute at Webster University rang in the the year of the dog with its annual Chinese New Year celebration on Monday, Feb. 13, in the Grant Gymnasium. Over 500 local K-12 students, parents, teachers and Webster University staff and students attended. The keynote speaker was Chinese-American guitarist Kaiser Kuo, co-founder of the popular Chinese heavy metal band Tang Dynasty and a leader of initiatives promoting greater China-U.S. cultural understanding.

Patty Li Named Director of Confucius Institute

The Office of Academic Affairs has announced that Patty Li has been named director of the Confucius Institute. Li comes to Webster with more than 10 years of nonprofit experience at the China Care Foundation and the Orianne Society, in addition to previous positions in auditing at Arthur Bell CPA firm, in research at John Hopkins University, and in English Language and Literature at Beijing Technology and Business University.

Lynch named interim director of Confucius Institute

Bill Lynch Named Interim Director of Confucius Institute

September 30, 2016

The Office of Academic Affairs announced that William (Bill) Lynch, professor in the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and former director of Webster’s London campus, has been named interim director of the Confucius Institute at Webster University. Lynch joined Webster University in 1992 as associate professor of voice and speech and was promoted to full professor in 2006. He served as London director from 2009 to 2015.
