To gather important data about the outcomes of our graduates, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness needs your help in encouraging Summer 2018 graduates to complete the Webster University Outcomes Survey. The Outcomes Survey is delivered via email to recent graduates worldwide approximately six to eight weeks after each term’s graduation date. Graduates from Summer 2018 received an email invitation to the survey the morning of Monday, Sept. 10.

2019-20 Faculty Research Grant Application Period Open

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Academic Affairs are now accepting applications for Faculty Research Grants for the 2019-20 academic year. This program encourages and promotes faculty research and professional development. Grant applications are invited for scholarly research, academic projects, artistic performances, exhibitions and studies in any discipline. Proposals that might lead to external funding are encouraged. Apply by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

Sverdrup Global Teaching Fellowship: Faculty Mobility Applications for Fall 2019

Applications for the Fall 2019 term are now open. The Leif J. Sverdrup Global Teaching Fellowship is the university’s in-network faculty mobility program. This program allows faculty the opportunity to travel to teach for a term or semester at one of the following Webster international campuses: Athens, Geneva, Leiden, Vienna, Accra, Cha-am/Bangkok, St. Louis (main campus and Gateway campus).

Applications for 2018-19 Adjunct Faculty Development Fund

Applications for the 2018-19 Adjunct Faculty Development Fund are now open. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 21, 2018. Requests for funds should be for activities during the period beginning June 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019. The fund, which was established in Spring 2016 by the Office of the Provost, is designed to support eligible adjunct faculty for professional development, professional travel and research activities.

Webster Advisors at NACADA Summer Institute

A team of Webster University faculty and staff advisors gathered at the NACADA (Global Community for Academic Advising) Summer Institute in Albuquerque to work on an action plan to discuss the creation of a Global Advising Council for Webster University. Faculty advisor attendance at the summer institute was funded in part by the Presidential Retention Challenge Fund.

Webster Welcomes Students in Summer TAP Program July 18-27

The Academic Resource Center and academic partners throughout campus are gearing up for the Summer TAP (Transitions and Academic Prep) program to be held July 18-27, 2018. TAP is a free residential program for conditionally admitted Transitions students who are new to Webster. During the 10-day program, TAP students live on campus, take a two-credit college course, and participate in campus workshops and activities, including the faculty "lunch and learn," to help them transition to university life.

John Pyle Named Chief Innovation Officer, VP for New Business

John Pyle has been appointed chief innovation officer and vice president for new business at Webster University. In this role, Pyle will grow and enhance Webster’s approaches to innovation across its services, programs and campuses to foster enrollment and revenue growth. He will lead the University’s approaches to business incubation, entrepreneurship, strategy execution, partnership and joint venture development in ways that competitively position Webster in a rapidly changing higher education sector.

Faculty Referrals Help Students Use Writing Center Resources

The Webster University community used the Academic Resource Center’s (ARC’s) Writing Center and Online Writing Center more than 2,000 times during the 2017-2018 academic year, with graduate students and undergraduate freshmen being the largest users, in part thanks to faculty recommendations about these services. The entire Webster University community is invited to review videos, handouts and presentation resources from the eighth annual Global Citizenship Collaboratory. The May 21-22 event brought guests from Webster’s international campuses and over 80 faculty, staff and students participating. Highlights included sessions on teaching GCP skills such as oral communication and critical thinking, and plenary activities related to assessment, planning, student success, and Webster’s technology ecosystem.

Brown Named to New ARC Assistant Director Role

Carolyn I. Brown has accepted the position of assistant director in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). She will officially begin this role on June 16, 2018, and has been filling most of the relevant responsibilities since late December 2017. The assistant director position is designed to consolidate all ARC integrity programs in one role.

Study Abroad Scholarships Awarded to 42 Students

Webster University study abroad scholarships have been awarded to 42 students going abroad on Summer 2018 and Fall 2018 programs. Overall, 26 students received awards for summer and 16 for fall. Award amounts ranged from $500-$3,000, with the average award was around $1,000. Students were selected based on a variety of factors, including GPA, financial need, essays, and recommendations, and the specific requirements of each award. During the 2018-19 academic year, about $100,000 in study abroad scholarships will be awarded.

Excitement Builds Around Student Success Portal

Faculty, professional staff, and even students have been expressing excitement about Starfish, the Student Success Portal. Feedback has focused on a number of areas, including the accessibility of information that is needed for day-to-day operations that was previously more cumbersome to find. But the excitement extends beyond the accessibility of information to the ease of connecting students to the supports they need to be successful, the ability to access and share notes in one globally-accessible location, and the improvement of business practices.

Faculty-Led, Short-Term Study Abroad Proposals for Spring, Summer 2019

Webster faculty members are invited to submit proposals for short-term, faculty-led study abroad courses for Spring or Summer 2019. Applications are open until the extended deadline of May 4, 2018. These programs are credit bearing and have an embedded travel component that highlights and supports the course learning objectives.
