Student Success Portal Training Continues for Faculty, Staff, Students

The Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish, launched Oct. 16. Users (students as well as faculty and staff members) may now access and explore the highly intuitive and easy-to-use system at their leisure, and trainings continue to more formally acclimate users to the current functionality. Get yourself up to speed on this major initiative through one of the following introductory training options.

The Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish, launches Oct. 16. Users will be able to access and explore the highly intuitive and easy-to-use system at their leisure, and trainings have been scheduled to more formally acclimate users to the current functionality. Introductory trainings have been scheduled beginning on Oct. 18, and running through the first full week of November. Click through for details on the first two weeks of training sessions.

The New Student Success Portal is Almost Here

The Student Success Portal, powered by Starfish, has its initial launch on Oct. 16! In this first phase, the focus will be on training our faculty, staff, and students on the benefits of this new shared technology. The rollout will include information about setting up profiles, understanding and submitting early alerts (Flags), providing positive feedback to students (Kudos), and connecting students to resources through their personalized success teams. In addition, training will focus on online appointment scheduling and shared advising notes.

Last Friday brought an impressive group of faculty writers and researchers together for a day of workshops focused on building productivity. In sessions on Planning for a Productive Year and Juggling Multiple Projects, speaker Katie Linder, from Oregon State University, elicited lively conversation around the tools attendees use to stay organized and offered insights into planning regimens that optimize for daily energy levels and maximum accountability. For those who are intent on making meaningful progress in your research this year, please join ORSP and Emerson Library staff for a Lunch and Learn on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

On Friday, Sept. 29, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will host Katie Linder for a day of workshops and coaching. Linder is director of the Ecampus Research Unit at Oregon State University, associate editor for the International Journal for Academic Development, and host of the “Research in Action,” "You've Got This," and "The Anatomy of a Book" podcasts.

Applications for the Fall 2018 term are now open. The Leif J. Sverdrup Global Teaching Fellowship is the university’s in-network faculty mobility program. This program allows faculty the opportunity to travel to teach for a term or semester at one of the following Webster international campuses:  Athens, Geneva, Leiden, Vienna, Accra, Cha-am/Bangkok, St. Louis (main campus and Gateway campus).

The survey is delivered via email to recent graduates worldwide approximately six weeks after each term’s graduation date.

Call for Messing Faculty Award Applications

September 08, 2017

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Academic Affairs are now accepting applications for the 2018 Wilma and Roswell Messing, Jr. Faculty Award. Every year since 1977, the Messing Faculty Award has been presented to a full-time faculty member for international summer activity that strengthens the curriculum of the faculty member’s department or improves the teaching/learning relationship. The award will fund travel and activities in Summer 2018.

Apply for a 2018-19 Faculty Research Grant

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Academic Affairs are now accepting applications for Faculty Research Grants for the 2018-19 academic year. The purpose of the Faculty Research Grant program is to encourage and promote faculty research and professional development. Grant applications are invited for scholarly research, academic projects, artistic performances, exhibitions and studies in any discipline. Proposals that might lead to external funding are encouraged. The deadline is Friday, Nov. 3.

Adjunct Faculty Development Fund Submission Period Now Open

August 15, 2017

The application period for Adjunct Faculty Development Fund requests opens today, Aug. 15, and runs through Thursday, Sept. 15. The fund, which was established last year by the Office of the Provost, is designed to support eligible adjunct faculty for professional development, professional travel, and research activities. The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Life-Changing West African Study Abroad Experience in Ghana

July 14, 2017

This summer, 10 Webster University students had the experience of a lifetime through the inaugural "West African Experience" study abroad program at Webster's campus in Accra, Ghana. Danielle MacCartney, associate professor of Sociology at the Webster Groves campus, taught Global Social Problems, supported by the Leif J. Sverdrup Global Teaching Fellowship. Webster Ghana academic director Michael Williams taught a second course, Pan-African Social Movements. Learn more about their experience in this story and at a study abroad event this fall.

Webster Welcomes Students in Summer TAP Program

The Academic Resource Center and academic partners throughout campus are gearing up for the Summer TAP (Transitions and Academic Prep) program to be held July 19-28, 2017. TAP is a free residential program for conditionally admitted Transitions students who are new to Webster. During the 10-day program, TAP students live on campus, take a two-credit college course, and participate in campus workshops and activities, including the faculty "lunch and learn," to help them transition to university life.
