W. Steven Winter Named Interim Chief Human Resources Officer

Webster University this week named W. Steven Winter its interim chief human resources officer. He will serve in this role while Webster completes the search for a successor to Betsy Schmutz, who retired as associate vice president and chief human resources officer at the end of 2017.

Winter has human resources leadership experience in a diverse range of industries, leading HR for corporations that operate in multiple regions and countries. He previously served in human resource leadership roles for Staples, Ascension Health, Gap Inc., and BJC Healthcare. He also founded the consulting firm, Inspire Human Resources Consulting, and previously served as an employment and labor attorney for the firm of Bearden, Breckenridge & Gidlow.

Among his areas of expertise are strategic planning, employee engagement and retention strategies, talent acquisition, employee training and HR practices compliance.

“We welcome Steven to Webster and appreciate his willingness to lead our talented human resources team during this transition,” said Webster University President Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble. “His experience engaging diverse workforces in complex institutions will serve our global university well until the appointment of the next chief human resources officer.”

Winter holds a BA from Washington University and a JD from the Washington University School of Law.
