Webster Online, New Programs in CIC Report on Innovations
The report was released in spring 2018.

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) recently released its report, “Innovation and the Independent College: Examples from the Sector,” quoting President Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble and referencing several Webster University innovations like online program, education of veterans, and new programming.

This guidebook for leaders pushing for change, includes Webster highlights such as:

  • Online classes as both a pioneer and innovator (Webex through synchronous courses)
  • Educating veterans through Webster’s network of military locations
  • Educating American and international students at U.S. satellite and partner locations; and
  • New areas of study, such as the merger of film and video programs to create more flexibility in teaching multimedia.

Learn more about these innovations and the entire comprehensive report of “examples from the sector below.

The CIC report notes how Webster offers 30 graduate degrees fully online in addition to 22 certificates and eight undergraduate degrees fully or partly online. Many traditional undergraduates take at least one online courses to increase the flexibility of their schedules.

Stroble is quoted discussing how Webster's “informal mission is: ‘We meet unmet needs.’" The corollary to this theme is that unmet needs change, so the institution has to change, too.”

Webster Highlights in CIC Report

Online Programs

According to a 2016 survey conducted by Learning House, Inc., 61 percent of CIC member institutions offered one or more online degree programs and 90 percent offered at least one online or hybrid course. Webster University, with a home campus in St. Louis and additional locations around the world, was an early adopter of online education and now offers 30 graduate degrees fully online in addition to 22 certificates and eight undergraduate degrees fully or partly online.

Approximately 9,500 students take at least one course online each year, and many traditional undergraduates take online courses to increase the flexibility of their schedules. Webster is moving from asynchronous forms of instruction—appropriate for widely-scattered students—to more sophisticated synchronous systems.
