Message to the Community

The following message was distributed from the President and Provost to the Webster University community.

Dear Members of the Webster University Community:

The tragic loss of life in the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Saturday morning, October 27th, is the most recent of events that disturb us as individuals and urge us to encourage each other as we learn more, understand more, and act in ways consistent with our values.

The issues surrounding this event are complex and the impact far-ranging. As members of a university community that embraces diversity and inclusion as one of our core values, we seek to learn from and with each other in order to create a society in which each of us belongs and prospers. One of the many aspects of our diverse identities is our experience and relationship to various faith traditions. While respect for and valuing of the diversity of and/or absence of faith traditions remain elusive around the globe, nevertheless it is a topic that warrants our attention and concern.

Along with interfaith leaders across the United States and here in St. Louis who have begun to organize vigils and events to show a unity of human concern for this loss of life, we will organize a series of Webster University events and forums that will help us learn more, gain deeper understandings, and express the emotions and thoughts we are experiencing. We are in touch with campus leaders and with leaders in the St. Louis community who will help us in this difficult time. While the event in Pittsburgh is foremost in our minds today, it of course, is not the only example of individuals seemingly targeted for their beliefs and convictions.

We will communicate about the first of these gatherings as soon as possible, with the intention that we will come together during this coming week.

Elizabeth (Beth) J. Stroble, Ph.D.
