Webster Responsds to SLIAC Statement Regarding Athletics - August 13 2020

WEBSTER GROVES – On Thursday evening, the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), which Webster University is a member, issued a statement that indicated that all athletic competitions, practices, workout sessions and other related team activities for all sports would be delayed effective immediately on all SLIAC campuses. Subsequently, SLIAC issued a second message that delayed only competitions along with contests, scrimmages, and practices with outside competition.

Webster University had previously agreed to move men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball competitions to the spring due to concerns about COVID-19. Other sports, such as men’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s tennis, which do not involve close contact, were scheduled to continue this fall.

Webster has reached out to SLIAC officials and other member institutions for clarification and more information.  Leaders at Webster University understand that the SLIAC statement has caused confusion among athletes who were anticipating being able to practice and prepare for competition during this academic year. University leaders believe that will still happen and are asking athletes for their patience as the University seeks more information from SLIAC. Recognizing the situation is fluid, Webster will be following any mandates from the NCAA and will make adjustments accordingly.  The University will issue further clarifying statements about athletics in the coming days as more information is received.

As in past messages, the University reiterates that these are unusual circumstances that the entire community is enduring. Everyone’s understanding and patience are appreciated as the University continues to work through these issues.
