Summer Music Camps Filled to Capacity
Jazz Camp saw 60 students led by Paul DeMarinis

Among the many Webster camps held this past summer to engage and teach the local community were two hosted by the Department of Music and filled to capacity.

Webster music faculty reached over 90 young students with a diverse curriculum and hands-on experience. Some attended on scholarship thanks to an on-going partnership with St. Louis Jazz Club.

Jazz Camp in July drew 60 students, led by professor Paul DeMarinis. Daily activities included combo rehearsals, jazz improvisation classes, instrumental master classes, faculty performances, specific lectures in jazz history, music technology and clinics on Latin music and melodic improvisation.

The camp faculty included 21 different musicians who appeared in masterclass settings, faculty performances and workshops on a rotating basis. They were comprised of some of this area's most active jazz performers and educators, including Willie Akins, Dave Black, Tom Byrne, Wayne Coniglio, Christopher Braig, Kevin Gianino, Randy Holmes, Kyle Honeycutt, Mike Karpowicz, Jim Martin, Keith Moyer, Kim Portnoy, Steve Schenkel, Carol Schmidt, Abbie Steiling, Jake Stergos, Carolbeth True, Ric Vice, Willem von Hombracht, Ben Wheeler and DeMarinis.

The St. Louis Jazz Club supports scholarships for students at Jazz Camp, and provides educational and rehearsal material for students as well. This ongoing partnership allowed 10 students to enroll on scholarship.

Also in the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts' Department of Music, the two-week Piano Camp enrolled 31 students.

The weeks includes master classes presented by Daniel Schene, Susan Martin, and alumna Olga Sedycias; classes in arranging for piano taught by alumnus Mike Ring, in composition taught by Matt Pace, and other sessions featuring camp directors Donna Vince and Pat Eastman, Ruth Price, Karl Koesterer, and Wen Shen. Eastman reported that the camp also included rousing games of "Music Jeopardy!"
