Men’s Basketball Team Continues Tradition of Visiting River Roads Lutheran K-8 Students

Webster basketball team players spent time reading to students at River Roads Lutheran
School.On Oct. 4, the Webster University men’s basketball team continued an 18-year tradition of visiting students at River Roads Lutheran School in Baden, Missouri.
Accompanied by Kate Northcott, director of the Student Literacy Corps, Webster's basketball team members read to younger students, assisted them in the classroom and worked with older students, talking with them about planning for college and the future.
“When the decision was made to put Webster Works Worldwide on hiatus, I worried about disappointing River Roads students," said Northcott. "The visit from their 'Webster friends' each October is a high point of their year. Coach agreed it was important we not 'break our streak' and was able to find the time when most players would be available.”
"For many River Roads students, their friends on the basketball team are the only college students they know," said Northcott. "The children enjoy meeting and talking with the players, but these visits aren’t just fun, they’re an important means of helping young students consider a wider array of possibilities for their future.”
Coach Bunch described the experience as just as important for his players. “Our team has really enjoyed the long relationship with River Roads Lutheran School," said Bunch. "It is a day our guys look forward to every year. Our players realize the importance of talking to young children about reading and taking your education seriously.”
River Roads Principal Yvonne Boyd had nothing but compliments for her Webster guests. “These young men are wonderful role models for our students. River Roads’ students and staff hope to continue this tradition for many years to come.”
