Webster University Participates in the 'Reverse Parade' for July 4

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which social distancing is encouraged, the city of Webster Groves canceled its annual Community Days three-day festival over the Independence Day holiday. Webster University traditional serves as a gold-level sponsor. Also canceled was the July 4 parade, which typically attracts tens of thousands of parade-goers lining the streets of Lockwood, Gore and Elm avenues.

In April, Mayor Gerry Welch and the City Council agreed to instead hold a “reverse parade,” allowing residents to enjoy the holiday weekend while following the guidelines of social distance. Community members and local business were invited to set up displays in their front yards or decorate their houses. The University participated in the reverse parade occasion with a display of an inflatable masked Gorlok and banner honoring healthcare and essential workers.
