Webster at Home: CMS cello students demonstrate Suzuki method virtually

Jun Seo and Tara Santiago, faculty members of the Community Music School (CMS) at Webster University, teach cello in the CMS' Suzuki Program. Due to students not being able to come onto Webster to practice their music, these members are taking the steps of making sure these young musicians have the necessary means of continuing cello practicing. Seo and Santiago have recorded their students performing French Folk Song from their homes.

The Suzuki method of instruction is based on the philosophy and teaching of the late Japanese educator Shinichi Suzuki, in which young children learn to play the violin, viola and cello the same way they learn to speak – by listening, imitating and repeating sounds. 

Children in the Community Music School Suzuki Program can start on cello as young as age five and violin and viola as young as age four, and continue through high school.  Santiago has a Master in Music from the New England Conservatory of Music. Seo also attended the New England Conservatory of Music for his Bachelor’s degree but earned his Master of Music and Doctorate in Musical Arts and Music Performance at the University of Austin.
