Chuck MuellerIt is with great sadness that we notify the Webster University community of the passing of Charles (Chuck) Mueller on April 15. Mueller was a member of the Webster University Board of Trustees from 1992 through 2004, and was board chair from 1998 through 2002.

During his time as a trustee, the University experienced tremendous growth with the expansion of the home campus including the opening of the Webster Village apartments and the construction of the Sverdrup Complex and University Center. There was also academic alignment with the establishment of schools and colleges. The Faculty Senate was formed establishing a faculty role in shared governance. Internationally, Webster University expanded to China, Thailand, and metro and military bases expanded from coast to coast. Mueller’s tenure with the board spanned the presidencies of Daniel Perlman and Richard Meyers.

Webster University acquired the St. Louis Symphony School (now named the Community Music School) from the symphony and saved the hallmark institution from shutting down. Also, Webster launched its first online programs, beginning a steady growth of online offerings that seamlessly integrated on-site offerings while maintaining the same academic quality.

Mueller spent his entire career at Union Electric/Ameren Corporation where he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He was also active with St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the MUNY and other St. Louis community organizations.

Mueller was a generous donor to the University and its initiatives. When interviewed for Webster’s Centennial, Mueller stated he was proud of Webster University’s ability to go to the students, to seek out diversity and to establish programs on military installations.
