A Day of Art, Learning, and Creativity at Webster University
August 24, 2023
The Department of Art, Design, and Art History (DADAH) in collaboration with St. Louis Public School (SLPS) art teachers recently hosted a professional development day at Webster University. The SLPS workshop, led by DADAH department chair Noriko Yuasa and visual arts/springboard coordinator of St. Louis Public Schools John Grapperhaus (M.A. ‘14), aimed to enrich the skills of local K-12 art educators.
Sixty-five art teachers from the region gathered at Webster University for a day of exploration and learning. The day kicked off with a lecture titled "Art History's Diversity Impact and Pitfalls,” led by Ryan Gregg, associate professor of art at Webster University. This session generated conversations about the role of diversity in art history and prompted attendees to reflect on pedagogical approaches to these topics.

Additional faculty and staff led presentations and workshops for the attendees, including a photography workshop led by Emily Mueller, an illustration session by Jodi Kolpakov, a printmaking workshop titled “Movable Type,” led by Tate Foley, and a ceramics workshop titled “Expressive Heads,” led by Lindsay Pichaske.

DADAH department chair Noriko Yuasa spoke to the success of the event.
“Through the SLPS workshop, regional art educators were able to learn new skills and media and incorporate them into the education of children. The workshop further connected us with the education system and art educators, many of whom ultimately take part in our programs and encourage students to explore art as a pathway to success. This event not only enriched teaching methods but also kindled a renewed passion for sharing the world of art with future generations.”
