Meet Christian Eckels, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Webster in 2001 and currently works as a product designer at CNN and an adjunct instructor at Santa Monica College.

What enticed you to choose Webster University for your degree?

Initially undecided about my major, I was a lost 18-year-old. However, I was attracted to Webster University for its strong liberal arts education and small class sizes, which promised a more personalized learning experience.

What stood out about your studies at Webster?

The Conservatory program was a highlight of my time at Webster, particularly the leadership of Peter Sargent and Dottie Englis. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping my early career interests and skills in theater arts.

How did your Webster degree help advance you in your career?

While my degree in Theater Arts was the foundation for an over a decade-long career in stage management and arts administration, my work-study experience in Webster University's computer labs was pivotal. It opened my eyes to diverse career paths and sparked an interest in creative fields beyond the theater, eventually leading me to explore and transition into product design and UX.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with a talented team of product designers, engineers and managers at CNN to enhance our digital platforms. At Santa Monica College, mentoring and instructing emerging designers is equally rewarding, helping them refine their skills and prepare for professional challenges.

What is something valuable you have learned during your career?

Patience and collaboration are vital in our interconnected society. Openness to unexpected opportunities can lead to significant professional advancements and learning experiences.

What advice would you give to others who are considering Webster University for their degree?

Embrace university life fully; it's a unique and privileged time. Engage with students and faculty outside your major and interests, attend diverse lectures and maximize cultural opportunities. Networking with alumni and peers can be incredibly beneficial.

What is your favorite spot on your Webster campus? Favorite spot around the University?

My favorite spot was the grounds between the Music Department and the Loretto Hilton Center, especially in the late spring and summer evenings filled with fireflies and activities connected to the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.

What has your life journey looked like?

I grew up in Colorado and headed to St. Louis for my undergrad at Webster. After a solid decade in New York City, where I juggled the early stages of my career and grad school—couch surfing all the way—I've finally planted roots in Los Angeles with my spouse. Here, I enjoy a more stable and rewarding life.

What was your first job, and what do you remember most about it?

My first job was at a Bed and Breakfast in Colorado Springs, where I started work at 3:30 a.m. I thought this early morning routine would kill me, but ironically, it shaped my early morning habits that persist today.

How do you spend your free time?

I'm deeply passionate about travel and art, often spending my downtime exploring galleries and museums. This exploration helps me deepen my appreciation for traditional and digital art forms. Looking back, I've always had a strong inclination towards culture and fine arts, and I wish I had engaged more with these interests during my years at Webster.

Is there anything else you want to share?

It's crucial for Webster students to connect with alumni and vice versa. I believe in the power of these connections to provide opportunities and guidance, and I'm eager to support Webster students and alumni in any way I can.
