Webster University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) marked the 30th anniversary of their joint international MBA (iMBA) program on Oct. 31 in Shanghai, with commencement exercises for the Class of 2026 followed by an anniversary ceremony. Leaders from both institutions joined faculty, industry mentors, students and more than 200 alumni to commemorate three decades of academic collaboration and to look ahead to the next chapter of their partnership.
Established in 1996 with approval from China’s Ministry of Education, the Webster-SUFE iMBA program was among the first Sino-foreign cooperative MBA degree programs in China. Over the past three decades, it has produced more than 3,000 graduates and earned a reputation for integrating rigorous global business education with a sophisticated understanding of China’s economy. Its alumni include chief executives, entrepreneurs, industry innovators and leaders in public service. Guided by its philosophy of “unity of knowledge and action, social responsibility,” the program continues to prepare business leaders who combine a global perspective with an informed command of the Chinese market.
During the anniversary ceremony, SUFE Vice President Jin Yuying praised the program’s enduring commitment to educational excellence. “Thirty years represents ‘standing firm,’” she said, invoking the Confucian maxim san shi er li. “This ‘standing’ is not merely a measure of age, but a testament to a solid foundation and clear direction.”
Ryan Guffey, executive vice president of Webster International, reflected on the qualities that have sustained the partnership. “Partnerships are easily signed, but difficult to sustain,” he said, noting that the program has endured leadership transitions at both universities, more than one global financial crisis and even a global pandemic. Continuing, Guffey furthered, “the foundation built over the last 30 years has set the stage for the next thirty”, creating a one-of-a-kind bilateral academic partnership to support global entrepreneurship, leadership, and change.
The anniversary celebration also featured an awards ceremony recognizing faculty and alumni for their outstanding contributions, as well as cross-cohort exchanges and cultural performances. Looking ahead, both universities reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their collaboration and to the continuous enhancement of a curriculum that addresses emerging demands in data analytics, sustainable enterprise, resilient supply chains and cross-cultural leadership. Together, they aim to prepare globally minded business professionals who are grounded in Chinese business practice and equipped to contribute to economic and social development.
