TAP Program Adds Service Learning Project, Preps New Students July 20-29

The Academic Resource Center is gearing up for the 2016 Summer TAP (Transitions and Academic Prep) program, which will be held from July 20-29. TAP is a free residential program for conditionally admitted Transitions students who are new to Webster.

During TAP, students live on campus, take college courses and participate in campus workshops and activities to help them transition to university life. This is the fifth year that the program has been institutionally funded. Since 2012, the program has grown from 12 to 36 students, non-credit to credit bearing, and commuter to residential.

A new and exciting collaboration this year includes a service learning project with Sustainability coordinator Kelsey Wingo, where students will learn about recycling and even create upcycled goods. Additional departments that will partner for the program include:

  • Office of Admission
  • First Year Experience
  • Academic Advising
  • Career Planning and Development
  • Office of Study Abroad
  • Financial Aid
  • Emerson Library
  • Housing and Residential Life
  • Media and Academic Technology Services
  • Public Safety

This year, the TAP program has added a second free credit hour for students with the addition of WRIT 1000 Basic Writing Workshop. Carolyn Brown, Writing Center & Plagiarism Prevention Program coordinator, developed the curriculum and three sections will be offered. This new addition is important because it now means that TAP students can earn a full 15 credit hours by the end of their first semester despite the 13 hour credit limit for conditionally admitted students. Students also enroll in EDUC 1500 Webster 101.

In addition to the extra credit hour, TAP will also include a faculty “Lunch and Learn,” in which faculty from all Schools/Colleges will meet with TAP students to discuss interests, give departmental tours, and answer questions related to their respective majors.  

The Transitions staff are excited about continued program expansion, partnerships, and the promise of increased student involvement and participation. We look forward to welcoming these new students to campus in a few weeks.
