Professor David Shambaugh Shares with WVPU Students and Guests His Views on the Future of China's Foreign Policy

Webster Vienna Private University had the pleasure to host visiting Professor David Shambaugh of George Washington University from the 19th through the 23rd of November 2019.

Professor Shambaugh is an internationally recognized authority and author on contemporary China and the international relations of Asia, with a strong interest in the European Union and transatlantic issues. His areas of expertise include China’s domestic politics; China’s foreign relations; China’s military and security; and international relations of Asia.

While here, Professor Shambaugh was a part of a series of private and public lectures that covered a variety of topics.  On Wednesday, the 20th, Professor Shambaugh gave interested students and faculty a look into his research and overview of his forthcoming book Where Great Powers Meet, which covers the ever-changing and competing for the relationship between China and the United States. 

The local media was also interested in Prof. Shambaugh’s expertise; In an interview published in Die Presse on November 29th, Prof. Shambaugh touched on the current political situation in China and the protests in Hong Kong among other things.

The following day, November 21st, Professor Shambaugh was part of a public lecture in coordination with the Diplomatic Academy on the future challenges for Chinese foreign policy.  Professor Shambaugh drew on his new book China & the World and spoke about the changes he saw in China over the past 70 years and what challenges they still faced today and possible future challenges.  Following his address, Professor Shambaugh answered audience questions and spoke with guests.
