Webster Vienna’s CLA Hosts Two Visiting Scholars

Webster Vienna Private University’s Center for Liberal Arts (CLA) is pleased to announce its support for two international scholars, Ms. Carlie Goode (The College of New Jersey, USA) and Dr. Jernej Habjan (Research Fellow and Assistant Professor at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts), during the current academic year. As a multidisciplinary center dedicated to developing a critical history of the present, the CLA is committed to supporting the innovative research of scholars from throughout the human, social and natural sciences. We are thus very pleased to welcome Ms. Goode and Dr. Habjan to WVPU.

During his short stay at Webster Vienna, Dr. Habjan will concentrate on a research project entitled "The Structure and Genealogy of Indifference: Logic – Epistemology – Ideology." Ms. Goode, a Fulbright Finalist awarded an English Teaching Assistantship and Research/Study Grant, is pursuing research on Viennese memorials with the assistance of Mag. Dr. Dieter Reinisch MRes, Adjunct Faculty in History at Webster Vienna’s CLA. In addition to continuing her research, Ms. Goode’s Fulbright grant also allows her to take classes at the University of Vienna and teach English at Austrian schools.

Both Goode and Dr. Habjan come to WVPU from very diverse academic backgrounds and, in Goode’s case, as a result of strong prior connections to Austria. Her interest in the country was first kindled by a high school German exchange to Weiz, Steiermark, and was reinforced by an insightful college semester abroad in Salzburg. Her academic advisor Dr. Cynthia Paces encouraged her to pursue a Fulbright after she completed her thesis, and Dr. Ryan Crawford, Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy and Department Head of CLA, generously extended support from Webster Vienna. Previous to her work with WVPU, Goode completed a Bachelor’s in History from the College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

Dr. Habjan obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Ljubljana and has held a postdoctoral position at the University of Munich and a research fellowship at the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna. He sits on the Research Committee on Literary Theory at the International Comparative Literature Association. His articles on contemporary literary theory have appeared in the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature, Journal of Global History, Journal of World Literature, and South Atlantic Quarterly. His book on critical theory, titled Ordinary Literature Philosophy, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury. He is also the co-editor of Globalizing Literary Genres (Routledge 2016), Academic Labour, Unemployment and Global Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan 2016), and (Mis)readings of Marx in Continental Philosophy (Palgrave Macmillan 2014). Dr. Habjan will be affiliated with WVPU as part of his fellowship through 2019 and Goode will be based in Vienna through July 2020.
