A Valentine's Day Gift from Ghana Gorloks to Children in Need

ghanaMembers of Ghana's Gorlok community had the opportunity to spend time with the children as the dropped off the generous load of necessities at the Kaya Childcare Center.

In an impressive community service effort, Webster Ghana students developed the campus’ first-ever coin drive led by the Student Government Association (SGA) to raise funds to purchase food items for underprivileged children at the Kaya Childcare Center in Accra. This center offers free early child education to young children of Kayayei (a familiar term used locally for female market porters.)

Over three weeks, students, faculty and staff donated loose change or bills, placing funds in collection jars in the university’s main reception, canteen area, library and Student Affairs office.

The fundraising goal was surpassed, and on the morning of Valentine’s Day, student volunteers, SGA representatives and Student Life staff went to make the donation along with toddler clothing, canned food items, chocolates, cake and icecream.

The officials at the center were overjoyed by the exhibit of love demonstrated. The Webster team went on to spend the rest of the morning engaging with the youth and assisting the coordinators with lunchtime set-up.
