Professor Kispert Earns the HAPS 2022 Teaching Award

Shannon KispertWebster anatomy and physiology professor Shannon Kispert was recently awarded the Gail Jenkins Teaching and Mentoring Award from the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society for 2022. Applicants from more than six states were considered.

“I am incredibly humbled to receive this award. If you know me, you know I love teaching more than anything. My time spent in the classroom, connecting with students and talking about how the human body works is truly the best part of my day,” she said.

The award was named after Montgomery College instructor of anatomy and physiology Gail Jenkins soon after her death.

The award is handed out each spring to one winner who is determined by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society and sponsored by Wiley Publishers, best known in the academic publishing world.

After just beginning her career at Webster the autumn of 2019, she receives a $1,000 prize, waived conference registration fees for the Fort Lauderdale conference at the end of May and the opportunity to host a conference workshop which showcases her teaching style. Her workshop is entitled, “Lights, Camera, Physiological Action: Creating Skits for Better Engagement and Understanding in the Anatomy and Physiology Classroom.” (Page 35 of the conference brochure.)

HAPS is a society which focuses on excellence in teaching of human anatomy and physiology and consists of faculty from all over the country. It hosts a national conference every year where educators go to learn about teaching, anatomy, physiology and themselves. The society also sets the national standards for learning objectives and has a research journal.

“I am incredibly thankful for this recognition and for all of those colleagues (and students!) who helped me hone my teaching skills while encouraging my creative spirit along the way!” she added.
