Nine PBS' New Season of Teaching in Room 9 Produced in Collaboration with Webster University

Webster students help create the Nine Networks show "Teaching in Room 9"

Webster students help create the Nine PBS' show "Teaching in Room 9," which will air on Nine PBS in St. Louis. A watch party for the first episode is scheduled in Sverdrup Hall at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Webster University’s School of Communications and School of Education teamed up with Nine PBS earlier this year to collaborate on and produce a new season of the locally produced “Teaching in Room 9.” Premiering Sept. 16, the new season of the award-winning program is designed specifically for pre-k through fourth grade learners.

The program was filmed on Webster’s main campus utilizing the School of Communications’ virtual cinema video wall. Webster students served as the production crew. The curriculum presented in the show was developed by students in the School of Education and features Stephanie Mahfood, PhD, interim dean of Webster’s School of Education, as one of the “Room 9” educators.

“The collaboration with Nine PBS was wonderful learning experience for students as we explored ways to bring the subjects we teach in classrooms to life on the television screen,” said Mahfood. “The collaboration with my colleagues in the School of Communications made the project even richer. We were able to demonstrate to the students working on the project how essential it is to involve people from multiple disciplines to introduce fresh ideas and broaden perspectives. I am excited to see the final product when it airs across the St. Louis region.”

A watch party for the first episode of the program will be held in the West Boylan Atrium in Sverdrup Hall from 9 – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Webster Community is invited. Refreshments will be served.
