Webster’ Masters Reading Program Receives an ILA National Recognition
July 14, 2025
Webster University’s School of Education Master of Arts Reading Program received the ILA National Recognition from the International Literacy Association (ILA). This recognition is valid through 2030. The ILA National Recognition is awarded based upon reviews of content-specific standards taught in the program and examines if they align with the high standards in the profession.
Webster’s program focuses on the best practices in the assessment of reading difficulties and instructional methodologies that meet the needs of all learners, including those with dyslexia. The program is one of a few programs with both the ILA National Recognition and an ILA Accreditation. It also is the only program in Missouri accredited by the International Dyslexia Association and the Center for Effective Reading Instruction.
“The benefits of having both an ILA National Recognition and ILA Accreditation are a demonstration of excellence on multiple levels. National Recognition shows that the program aligns with ILA's rigorous content standards for the preparation of literacy professionals, while accreditation provides a broader validation that the entire program—structure, faculty qualifications, assessments, and outcomes—meets national best practices,” said Paula Witkowski-Dieckman, PhD, director of Webster’s MA in Reading and the Dyslexia Certificate programs. Witkowski is nationally recognized as one of 22 experts in dyslexia. “This shows that Webster’s program is committed to ongoing reflection and excellence, and not just meeting the standards for compliance. Few programs receive both recognitions from the ILA, and the fact that we also have an accreditation from the International Dyslexia Association further emphasizes the uniqueness of our program.”
According to the ILA report, Webster’s program is unique because it offers students the opportunity to “share their assessment results for further analysis, additional collaborative and application opportunities, and mechanisms for reflecting and sharing with a variety of stakeholders.” Overall, Webster’s program was ranked as “distinguished” in eight of the 30 categories and meets standards in all other categories.
Webster was informed of the recognition on June 12. The program previously was accredited by the ILA in 2010, with that accreditation being renewed in 2018.
