Webster University Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2017

Webster University and director of athletics, Scott Kilgallon, are pleased to announce five Gorlok greats as the newest members of its Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Webster University Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2010 to honor those who reflect the Department’s mission of success in the classroom, the community and the arena of competition. Former players, coaches, and other individuals who have made significant contributions to the program, are eligible for selection. 

The 2017 inductees include the two most prolific scorers in Webster women’s soccer history; a first-team All-American pitcher; one of the top scorers in men’s basketball, and a Josten’s Trophy national finalist. 

They will be inducted on Feb. 4, 2017, in a ceremony at Webster’s University Center.

Christy Capkovic '11, Soccer

As a forward, Christy Capkovic was part of Webster women’s soccer ‘Dynamic Duo’, along with teammate, Megan (Niederschulte) Garrett, from 2007-2010.  This combo scored 146 goals in that four-year period, as Capkovic amassed 88 goals, the 25 ^th all-time high total in NCAA III history.  Capkovic is Webster’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points. She was the NCAA III leader in goals (1.65) and points (3.9) per game in 2009 as she netted 33 goals and had 78 points total.  She was named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team all four years at Webster. Capkovic was an ESPN Academic All-American and SLIAC All-Academic in 2010. She was named Webster’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2009 and 2010. 

An elementary education graduate from Webster in 2011, Capkovic completed a Master’s of Science in Education in Curriculum and Instruction at Southwest Baptist University.  She is currently a first grade teacher at Bierbaum Elementary in the Mehlville School District in St. Louis

Megan (Niederschulte) Garrett '11, Soccer

Megan (Niederschulte) Garrett was the second half of Webster women’s soccer ‘Dynamic Duo’, from 2007-2010, along with Capkovic scoring 146 goals in that four-year period.  Garrett, a forward/midfielder, finished her career with 58 goals, 41 assists and 157 points, all second on Webster’s all-time high list.  She was named to the SLIAC All-Conference Team three years, being a First Team selection in 2010 and was also honorable mention in 2008. A solid performer in the classroom as well, she was named to the Dean’s List three times at Webster. 

Garrett graduated from Webster in 2011, majoring in Media Communications and minoring in Marketing. Currently, she is a commercial sales manager at Woodard in St. Louis. She is married to Jeremiah Garrett.

Darin Hoggatt '08, '10, Basketball

Darin Hoggatt was a dominant center in the SLIAC during his basketball career at Webster, being named First Team All-Conference in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, and to the Second Team in 2007-2008. The 2007-2008 Webster men’s basketball squad was the first to go 16-0 in the SLIAC and the first to win 20 games in a single season. The Gorloks also won the SLIAC title three of the four years Hoggatt played, the only SLIAC team to do so. Hoggatt is fourth in points, first in field goal (FG) percentage, first in free throws, third in FGs and seventh in rebounds on Webster’s all-time career lists. 

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Webster in 2008. Hoggatt then earned a Master’s of Science in Finance in 2010 while assisting with Webster’s men’s basketball team. After two stints at Stifel Nicolaus, and owning his own business, Hoggatt currently works for Wells Fargo as a model risk governance analytic consultant.  He is married to Lauren Hoggatt, and they have a son, Miles.

Katy Meyer '11, Basketball

Katy Meyer was one of the top scorers in Webster women’s basketball history, and was deadly from beyond the three-point arc. Meyer was a Josten’s Trophy Finalist in 2011, one of only 10 NCAA III athletes nationwide considered for the prestigious award, based on her athletic, academic and community service resume. She was third on Webster women’s career scoring list, first in three-point field goals, first in three-point percentage and fourth in rebounds. Meyer was SLIAC First Team All-Conference in 2011, Second Team in 2010 and Honorable Mention in 2008 and 2009. She was the 2011 SLIAC Tournament MVP as Webster won and advanced to just its third NCAA III Championships.  Meyer was SLIAC All-Academic three years as well. 

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish from Webster in 2011, Meyer studied and taught in Spain after graduation. Since 2014, she has taught English as Foreign Language in Perugia, Italy, currently at Sisas Segnaletica.  Meyer has continued her basketball playing career, first in Spain, and now playing for a semi-professional team in for Pallacanestro  Perugia.

Will Savage '10, Baseball

Will Savage, who is on most of Webster’s career all-time top-ten pitching lists, made his mark for arguably the best single season pitching performance in Gorlok baseball history.  In 2010, Savage was a Rawlings/ABCA First Team All-American, one of only three baseball players in SLIAC history to be named.  He also was Rawlings/ABCA First Team All-Central Region, was named to the NCAA III Central Region All-Tournament Team, the SLIAC All-Tournament Team, and was SLIAC First Team All-Conference.  Savage landed in the Webster single season record book in 2010 for going 9-0 (tied-highest winning percent and most wins), with a 1.52 ERA (2nd ), allowed a .172 batting average (1st ), had six complete games (2nd ), and recorded three shutouts (1st ). He was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Second Team and was the Webster Male Athlete of the Year in 2010.  Savage also earned SLIAC All-Academic honors in 2007 and 2008. 

After graduating from Webster with a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 2010, Savage completed a Master’s of Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois in 2013.  hile working on his Master’s, he worked at libraries in the Chicago suburbs, developing programs to encourage reluctant young male readers. This led to his current position as director of youth services in the Lisle (IL) Library District.  He is married to Lisa Savage.

These five Hall of Famers were selected by a committee made up of faculty, coaches, and staff. This year’s class will bring the total Hall of Fame membership to 34.
