CMS Presents Emerging Composers Concert and Composition Workshops March 25

The Community Music School of Webster University presents the Emerging Composers Concert on Saturday, March 25, at 3 p.m., at the Community Music School Concert Hall. The event will feature professional performances of the winning works from the Young Composers Competition performed by St. Louis musicians from Equinox Chamber Players, members of the Perseid Quartet, and other area professionals. Additional workshops will be held with Elizabeth Ogonek of Oberlin Conservatory and David Werfelmann of Webster University.
The event is hosted by CMS and sponsored by Arden and Harry Fisher and is free and open to the public.
This winners of the 2016-2017 Young Composers Competition are:
Level One (12-16 years of age):
1st Place: Stella G. Willoughby, age 16, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, for "Structurae Modorum"
2nd Place: Li Chibing, age 16, from Beijing, China, for "Rivulet in Mountains"
Honorable Mention: Andrew Courtney, age 16, from Corona del Mar, California, for
"Movement for String Quartet"
Level Two (17-21 years of age):
Tie for 1st Place:
Alex Williams: age 21, from Kansas City, Missouri, for "Visions and Fantasy"
Lucy McKnight: age 17, from Los Angeles, California, for "Misery made me a fiend"
Honorable Mention: Shiwei Liu, age 21, from Shanghai, China, for "Twins for Two Violins"
With the Competition growing to international status, a "Best from St. Louis" composer was recognized to encourage a deserving local St. Louis young composer. This year, Zach Fendelman of St. Louis was recognized as the Best from St. Louis for the 2016-2017 Young Composers Competition.
"The student composers selected in this competition are among the best emerging young composers in the world," said Carol Commerford, director of the CMS. "We received submissions from all over the globe including the United States, Canada, China, England and Italy. It will be exciting to hear these amazing works performed by professional musicians in a concert setting and a first for some of these young composers."
Schedule of Events
10 a.m. - Workshop on School and Project Funding with guest composer, Elizabeth Ogonek, Oberlin Conservatory. Ogonek has been very successful in finding resources to help support her work and education. Advice will be shared on how to identify these resources.
12:30 p.m. - Workshop "Presenting the Score - Guidelines and Best Practices for Preparing Beautiful Scores and Parts" with David Werfelmann, Webster University. Werfelmann will show students how to make their music look stunning. Drawing on resources such as the score preparation guidelines provided by the Major Orchestra Librarians' Association, Werfelmann will demonstrate the best practices for score presentation so that they can communicate the compositional vision clearly and precisely.
3 p.m. - Emerging Composers Concert featuring professional performances of the winning works from the Young Composers Competition performed by St. Louis musicians from Equinox Chamber Players, members of the Perseid Quartet, and other area professionals.
The event is free and open to the public.
