Chinese Dance Professor Leads Master Class

As part of the Confucius Institute at Webster University’s China Spotlight Series and the Webster University Department of Dance’s Summer Intensive, the two groups jointly invited Jie Wang, an associate professor from the Dance Education Department in the School of Arts and Communication at Beijing Normal University in China to the Webster Groves campus.

She held a master class for high school students from across the country on Aug. 2 in the Jean and Wells Hobler Center for Dance at Webster.

Wang’s class showcased Tibetan folk dance. Through the introduction of Tibetan customs and culture and analysis of Tibetan dance style, the students acquired a deep understanding of the essence of Tibetan dance culture.

For the majority of the students, this was their first encounter with Tibetan folk dance. By the end of the masterclass, students studied a small dance and gave a performance for their parents. They achieved a lot in a short period of time.

The China Spotlights Program is a Confucius Institute initiative to help more students understand Chinese culture through the arts. The program allowed Wang to meet with both Maggi Dueker, director of the Dance Department, and Patty Li, director of the Confucius Institute, and opens further collaboration opportunities between the Department of Dance at Webster University and Beijing Normal University.
