Remembering Wayne Loui, Actor, Director, Early Conservatory Mentor
February 11, 2021
The Webster University community remembers Wayne Loui, former professor and theatre icon who played an early role in what became the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster.
Loui joined Webster in 1962 to direct the Theatre Department at the invitation of legendary faculty member Marita Woodruff. Loui and Woodruff worked together on the outdoor Theatre Impact program, which in 1966 evolved into their co-founding of the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The Rep is located on Webster's campus and remains part of the professional theatre partnerships that help create a singular expereince for Conservatory students.
Originally from Davenport, Iowa, Loui remained in St. Louis as a teacher, director and actor who inspired countless students, peers and theatre patrons.
"Wayne was a mentor to many and a major influence on the professional theatre in St. Louis," said Paul Steger, dean of the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts. "His gentle wisdom, artistry and teaching touched generations of theatre practitioners. For those of us lucky enough to have studied with him, we hold his teachings and humanistic spirit dear to our hearts. Wayne introduced me to Webster and I am forever grateful. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family."
