Webster University students can start earning a degree in artificial intelligence starting in the Fall of 2025. The George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology now offers a Master of Science in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is one of the fastest growing fields in the technology industry. Last month, a new analysis of the job market found that openings in the AI field have jumped 68% in the past three years.

“Our program is designed to enable those who already are in the computer science and engineering fields to gain new skills and help them advance in their career paths and remain relevant to the quickly evolving nature of the impact of AI on the computer science discipline,” said Professor Jim Curtis, chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science. “The changes in the field of Artificial Intelligence have been incredible, with most people just at the beginning stages of understanding this disruptive technology. This program will help fill a gap in the need to educate professionals in their ability to leverage AI in a manner that will improve the quality of life and advance our knowledge of everything.”

The program is designed to give students a strong foundation in the theory and practice of developing and maintaining AI systems. Classes will include hands-on experience in developing algorithms and machine learning techniques using professional software and tools, including the programming language of Python.

Advanced topics that will be covered in the program include:

  • Machine Learning
  • Programming
  • Software Design and Computer Architecture
  • Software Development
  • Computer Architecture and Systems
  • Data Structures
  • Algorithms and Computations
  • Processing Natural Language
  • Cloud Storage
  • IoT Software and Applications

Students also will have access to Webster’s UNCOMN Cybersecurity Center, home to the state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Center of Excellence Laboratory and the Cybersecurity Academic Advisory Council. The center promotes undergraduate- and graduate-level cyber education, while serving as a venue for collaboration between faculty, students and community members on cybersecurity issues. It was founded in 2023 in partnership with UNCOMN, a St. Louis based agency providing business-to-business management and technology consulting services, to rebrand the program’s Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, which is used to test the latest methods of detecting and stopping online attacks.

Webster’s Computer Science Department is nationally recognized. Earlier this year it was named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense center by the National Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE). In 2019, Webster University was named as the first private non-profit university in Missouri to receive accreditation from the NCAE in Cyber Defense program.. Other national programs have taken notice of Webster’s program. The program was recognized in 2022 as offering one of the most innovative instructional methods among cybersecurity programs in the United States by the National CyberWatch Center.
