Chamber Singers Perform with Josh Groban in Kansas City

Webster University Chamber Singers performed yet again with Josh Groban, pop superstar, on Tuesday, Aug. 16, this time at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City.

Groban, who will headline a new Broadway show this autumn, is wrapping up a USA tour to promote his latest album, Stages, featuring songs from the Broadway stage.

“We were elated when Chamber Singers got the local call to sing with Josh 10 months ago,” said Jeffrey Carter, chair of the Department of Music. “Then his agents asked Chamber Singers to perform two more concerts with Josh while the student group was on tour in Florida in March. We moved heaven and earth and airline tickets, and we made it happen. Now when Josh's tour hit Kansas City, 20 Webster students answered the call to start the school year early by joining the superstar on stage at this outdoor amphitheater across the state.”

The Kansas City Star's concert review noted the significance of the appearance, as the Chamber Singers joined Groban for "an emotional reading of 'Dust & Ashes,' a consequential new song he will perform in two months when he makes his Broadway debut in 'Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.'"

Trent Patterson, associate professor of Music, leads Chamber Singers. “Four concerts in a year’s time — it’s not a bad day when we sing with Josh Groban,” Patterson said. “We really are the go-to choir in St. Louis, with some good recognition in Central Florida and in Kansas City!”

Those previous appearances include Groban's sold-out performance at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis last fall.
